The 10th Global Baku Forum on “The World of Today: Challenges and Hopes” featured the second panel session on the theme "The age of mega threats: climate security; food security; nuclear security".
The session was moderated by President of the European Coalition of Cities against Racism Benedetto Zacchiroli.
In his remarks, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, 1996 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate José Ramos-Horta urged to turn attention to the problems of climate change and water shortage.
Ramos-Horta also highlighted the negative impact of price hike on the world economy following the coronavirus pandemic.
Chief Scientist at the Food and Agriculture Organization of UN (FAO) Ismahane Elouafi called to look at reality and solutions when it comes to food security and emphasized the need for better environment.
Addressing the session, President of the Liberal International, former Minister of Environment of Morocco former Special Envoy for Climate Change of Morocco Hakima El Haite described environmental pollution as a global problem. She said that the Global Baku Forum is an ideal platform for addressing the global challenges.
Minister of Information and Social Development of Kazakhstan Darkhan Kydyrali highlighted the country’s decision on nuclear-free world made in 2006, saying that Kazakhstan’s decision has echoed in the world. He also noted that Kazakhstan has always supported peace.
Azerbaijani Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev said the issues discussed at the panel session are of global importance. The minister said that the climate change affects many aspects. Highlighting Azerbaijan’s green development initiative implemented in the liberated territories, Mukthar Babayev noted that landscaping works and the smart city conception are being implemented in the areas.
Other speakers included State Counsellor to the Prime Minister of Romania Laszlo Borbely and former Prime Minister of Montenegro Igor Luksic.
The panel session continued with discussions.
